New Mexico FIRST LEGO League

"Sport for the Mind  -  the hardest fun you'll ever have"

FIRST® LEGO® League

FLL teams build LEGO-based robots and develop research projects based on a real-world Challenge that changes annually. Their activities are guided by FLL Core Values.

Students in grades 4-8 (ages 9-14) get to:
  • Strategize, design, build, program, and test an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology
  • Create innovative solutions to challenges facing today's scientists
  • Develop career and life skills including crtitical thinking, time management, and teamwork
  • Become involved in their local and global community
FLL Core Values

The FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. They are among the fundamental elements that distinguish FLL from other programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.

  • We are a team.
  • We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
  • We know our coaches and mentors don't have all the answers; we learn together.
  • We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
  • What we discover is more important than what we win.
  • We share our experiences with others.
  • We display Gracious ProfessionalismTM in everything we do.
  • We have FUN!
FLL Challenge
Core Values - Robot Game - Project

Each September, a new Challenge - based on a real-world scientific topic - is unveiled to FLL teams across the world.

Each Challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Project , and the FLL Core Values.

Teams participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game) - developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project) - all guided by the FLL Core Values.

Teams then have the opportunity to participate in official tournaments and local events where they are evaluated in: Core Values, Project, & Robot Game categories.
